Set of 12 Vintage Butterfly and Insect Prints

In the 19 century documenting the species of wild flora and fauna was of great interest to the inquisitive naturalist of the age.  This was a time when such artists as John J. Audubon captured the Birds of America in their natural habitat.  In this same spirit, William Home Lizar (1788 - 1859) was a painter and engraver.  William was taught publishing and engraving by his father and then led the family publishing business "Lizars" to become experts making finely detailed hand painted engravings of natural history subjects.
